Seminar 02: Implementing a Full-XML Workflow: Why Isn't Everyone Doing It?
Implementing a Full-XML Workflow: Why Isn't Everyone Doing It?

A full-XML workflow for books and journals publishers is now achievable through authoring and citation management tools, online content management systems, and integration with publishing production systems. So why isn't everyone moving to a fully XML-based workflow?

A panel of experts experienced in using XML to grow the reach of content and streamline publication processes will share their perspective on whether the available XML-authoring and formatting tools are ready for widespread deployment, challenges that you will face when implementing an XML-based workflow, and recommended best practices for preparing your editorial and production teams for XML usage.

This is a non-technical session geared towards publishers, editorial staff, and production staff for both books and journals. You will learn from the panelists' experiences and be prompted to evaluate:

  • How much benefit do you want to obtain from content reuse and repurposing?
  • How much work do you want to do yourself?
  • How much time and money will an XML-based workflow implementation require?

Using XML during the publication process provides the opportunity to increase production capacity, feed citation and metadata information into scholarly databases, and introduce unique and rich metadata-related content to a global community. This session is meant to guide those not using XML in their publishing workflows in evaluating whether they should, and also to update experienced users of XML on what industry peers' are doing to create the most effective and efficient publishing workflows.
